Toilet Training

How do I know if my child is ready for toilet training?

Most children are usually ready to start toilet training between the ages of two and four. However, every child is unique- some may show signs of readiness earlier, while others might need a little more time.

We recommend a child-led approach, which means waiting until your child shows signs they’re ready. This helps avoid unnecessary frustration and resistance, making the process smoother for everyone.

Some common signs that your child may be ready include having fewer wet nappies, showing discomfort when their nappy is wet or dirty, or being able to pull their pants up and down independently.
“Potty training is a developmental process, not a race.”
Learning to use the toilet is an important milestone for every child. It is a massive step towards independence but toilet training can also be a nerve-wracking and stressful time for you as a parent.
We have supported many families over the years to make this stage as stress-free and successful as possible.

Common issues that can arise while toilet training

Toilet training is not always straightforward. Every child learns at their own pace. We are here to guide and support you through the process, helping make toilet training a more positive experience for both you and your child.

The most common challenges that we see are:

Resistance or fear of sitting on or using the toilet

Withholding wee or bowel movements

Finding it difficult to communicate the need to use the toilet

Frequent accidents following a period of success

Power struggles arising around toileting routines

Difficulty recognising or responding to body cues

When to seek help with toilet training?

Toilet training can be challenging, and there’s absolutely no shame in asking for help. We’ve supported many children and parents on this journey, and often a little extra guidance is all that’s needed to get back on track.

As always, our approach is child-centred. We’ll take a close look at your child’s current toileting routine and work with you to create a plan that fits your child’s needs, your family, and your lifestyle. As part of our support, we will be with you each step of the way to ensure you feel supported and confident throughout the process.
